When I have my “power building” seasons in my training and do the main barbell lifts, I run 5/3/1. Love it. Simple, I see progress, and it doesn’t beat me up.
Great article. I discovered 5/3/1 a few years ago after many years of sporadic bodybuilding training. I'll never be confused for a big strong guy, but this was the program that actually helped pack some real mass onto my frame for the first time in my entire life. My training focus has shifted since those days, but I still like to run some version of 5/3/1 in winter to build a solid strength base and regenerate some mass before I dive back into other activities the rest of the year.
Outstanding! I will fight tooth and nail for someone looking for a "program" 531 is hands-down the best and most customizable available. Plus Wendler is quite possibly the coolest guy in strength. Back when he worked for EliteFTS I found out we were both fans of Amy Sherman-Palladino's brilliantly written series, the Gilmore Girls, and he and I shared an incredibly insightful Q&A thread regarding said show. I have to say though, I'm a bit disappointed-a 531 article and no mention of N.O.V.?!? That is the one template I always fall back on when life gets in the way and I have to get the most put of doing the least in the gym!
As an academic and someone who never picked up a barbell until 3 years ago, this is all fascinating. Though 5/3/1 sounds similar to Dan John’s Easy Strength or am I missing something? Though I imagine most weightlifting programs are derivative in one way or another.
